Every once in a while you get a hold of a great book that's not getting much buzz, but should. That was the case with <b><a href="http://a.co/2dxKCVc" target="_blank">Texas Lightning</a></b>, Caroline Clemmons's first book in her newest series, Texas Time Travel.</div>

<span style="font-size: large;">Blurb</span></div>
<div>
<div>
How can two people from different eras own the same ranch? </div>
<div>
Penelope Jane Terry knows everything about ranching in spite of being a lone woman. She is determined to send to jail the rustlers who believe they can steal what is hers… until she is caught spying on their dirty works and must ride for her life. What Penny doesn’t count on is being hurtled over a 120 years into the future.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Jake Knight believes the attractive woman who stumbled into his home one rainy evening either has amnesia or is certifiably insane. Unless, that is, she is in league with whoever is trying to drive him out of business. Someone is trying to force him to sell his ranch by staging a string of damaging incidents. Jake’s been kept so busy making repairs that he can’t run his ranch. Even if he were stupid enough to wish to sell, the ranch is so firmly entailed that no one can break the conditions. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Jake gradually learns Penny is who she claims, no matter that time travel is supposed to be impossible. They’re locked into a clash that it seems only one of them can win. If an outsider weren’t trying to kill Jake as well as bankrupt him, perhaps he and Penny might be able to reach an agreement. But, there is that treasure….</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: large;">My Thoughts</span></div>
<div>
Talk about a page turner! Having finished my work for the day, I decided to read a chapter before I went to bed. I had no idea what to expect, although I've read many of Ms. Clemmons's other books and of course knew whatever she wrote, it'd be good. Well. I finally made it to bed at 6am.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The first scene draws you in--action, intrigue, and a set up for a humdinger of a book, but then it all turns left and we're headed a new direction--to the 21st Century. But as a reader, I knew what was going on. Poor Penny didn't have a clue, and even when she did, there was the daunting task of convincing folks that she's over 100 years old.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Jake... sigh. Let's just call him drool-worthy. He has his own share of problems without dealing with a crazy lady who claims she's the real owner of his ranch. I couldn't help but fall in live with this character.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Overall, this is a terrific book and I'll definitely be reading the next one, <a href="http://a.co/0L88pYp" target="_blank">Texas Rainbow</a>, which is already out, with a third one promised soon. Congratulations to Caroline Clemmons for creating yet another outstanding series, and congratulations to me because I'm looking forward to reading more awesome Caroline Clemmons books!</div>

by <a href="http://www.jacquierogers.com/" target="_blank">Jacquie Rogers</a><br />
<br />
This story is set near Silver City, Idaho, and is a novella associated with the <a href="http://www.jacquierogers.com/hoo.html" target="_blank"><i>Hearts of Owyhee</i> series</a>. <b>A Flare of the Heart</b> was first published in the Prairie Rose Publications anthology <b><a href="http://amzn.com/B00HU5SCYE" target="_blank">Hearts and Spurs</a></b>.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Blurb</span><br />
Celia Valentine Yancey has no illusions she’ll ever enjoy wedded bliss, so chooses marriage over spinsterhood even if she has to marry a man her father picked. On the way to meet her groom, she endures armed robbery, a stagecoach wreck, a dozen hungry baby pigs—and an incorrigible farmer.<br />
<br />
Ross Flaherty retired from bounty hunting to become a farmer but now Celia has brought his worst fear to his door—in more ways than one. A ferocious wolf-dog and a dozen piglets are no match for this determined lady.<br />
<br />
Which is more dangerous—the Sully Gang or Miss Celia Yancey?<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">Excerpt</span><br />
<i>Bob Scully, bent on revenge, and his gang have Ross Flaherty's house under siege, but Flare and Celia aren't in the house--the local sheriff is.</i><br />
<br />
“Come out of the house, Flare,” Bob Scully hollered. “And fight like a man!” <br />
<br />
The sheriff answered his request by firing twice. <br />
<br />
Celia stayed close by Ross’s side, trying her best not to snap any twigs, sneeze, or do anything that might call attention to him. She followed him down the creek, then up the hill to a pile of boulders about twenty feet behind the barn.<br />
<br />
“He’s reloading,” Ross whispered. “We’ll stay right here until he cuts loose with another round.”<br />
<br />
“How do you know?” Celia asked. She could see most of the Scully gang and part of the house.<br />
<br />
“Sixth round. Always keep count—then you know what you’re up against.”<br />
<br />
“But you said to only load five,” she whispered.<br />
<br />
“Load six when you need them. Like right now.”<br />
<br />
Celia loaded a sixth bullet. “Where do you want me to go?”<br />
<br />
“Stay right here. When the sheriff fires another shot, or in two minutes, whichever comes first, start firing. Count to twenty between each shot. Aim low in front of the horses—kick up as much dirt as you can.”<br />
<br />
“And where will you be?”<br />
<br />
“I’ll be making my way around the pasture to the field next to the house. There’s some alfalfa growing and it’s pretty tall. I can belly-crawl through it without them noticing so long as you keep ’em busy.”<br />
<br />
“Then what?”<br />
<br />
“Then you keep pulling the trigger until you’re down to the last five rounds and leave the rest to me. If things don’t go my way, head back to the creek and follow it to town.”<br />
<br />
He turned to leave, but she grasped his shoulder to give him a peck on the cheek for luck. Instead, he faced her and she kissed him right square on the lips. She was stunned.<br />
<br />
He must have been stunned, too, because he stared at her for the longest moment.<br />
<br />
<br />
“For luck,” she whispered.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
by Jacquie Rogers</div>
<span style="font-size: large;">Blurb</span><br />
Alone in the high-mountain desert, self-sufficient Betsy Lynch is determined to eke out a living selling goat cheese while she fulfills her father’s dream to find a rich silver lode. Claim jumpers threaten to take everything she holds dear, so Betsy uses a bullwhip, her wiles, traps, goats, and an attack rooster to defend her land.<br />
<br />
<b><a href="http://amzn.com/B01407R6E6" target="_blank">Don’t Go Snaring My Heart</a></b> was originally published in Prairie Rose Publications’ <a href="http://amzn.com/B00KFFS2O6" target="_blank">Lassoing a Groom</a> anthology, and is now available as a standalone novella. It takes place in Owyhee County, Idaho, and is part of the <i>Hearts of Owyhee</i> series. Check out the novels at my <a href="http://www.jacquierogers.com/hoo.html" target="_blank">Hearts of Owyhee page</a>.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Excerpt</span><br />
“Betsy, I want to kiss you.”<br />
<br />
“I was wonderin’ when you’d ever get around to that.” Betsy leaned onto Dex's chest. “Now’s a good time.”<br />
<br />
He lowered his head and touched his lips to hers, gently at first, but then he caressed her back and hugged her tight, twining his fingers through her hair as he deepened the kiss. A thrill swirled through her, stirring her womanly parts and her soul, too. She’d kissed Petey Echols when she was twelve, but that peck was nothing like this.<br />
<br />
When Dex pulled back, she clasped the back of his neck and kissed him again. He didn’t object, brushing his hands across her back, over her waist, and to the sides of her breasts. She gasped at that, for the sensation was unlike anything she’d ever felt. Betsy was not naïve about sex—she’d been around animals all her life—but she had no idea of the wonderful ways a man—this man—could make her body sing.<br />
<br />
Finally, he set her back, a pained look on his face. “Betsy, I want to marry you.”<br />
<br />
“I want to marry you, too.”<br />
<br />
“No, you don’t. I’ve been in prison. That rundown ranch and puny herd is all I own. You’re beautiful, Betsy. You could get any man you want, and it shouldn’t be me.” He pressed two fingers to his forehead. “I’ve been hankerin’ for you since the day you strung me upside down, and I’ve thought about it a lot. Maybe you should be around other men and see if you still want me, because I’m no prize.”<br />
<br />
“I’m going to say one thing and then you’re going to kiss me again, because I really liked it.” She backed him to the table and leaned into him. “I’ve gone to town nearly every month of the last two years—leastways in the good weather—and there ain’t one feller there that’s man enough for me. I want you, and I’ll have you.”<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5_01mF_RoxHp_qVguYiZi1U3wQIiaJm8s5aNsyeobLKWuvJOY4H3-qfVHF-1Uxqr-cMA3wWfwRSUyVk-kzZfFKjetXCBtBn46m21WgXXWqkNHjxjM-yqMlKc1rbMladL4LGP_vag0w-A/s1600/Goat_DontGoSnaringMyHeart.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="846" data-original-width="564" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5_01mF_RoxHp_qVguYiZi1U3wQIiaJm8s5aNsyeobLKWuvJOY4H3-qfVHF-1Uxqr-cMA3wWfwRSUyVk-kzZfFKjetXCBtBn46m21WgXXWqkNHjxjM-yqMlKc1rbMladL4LGP_vag0w-A/s320/Goat_DontGoSnaringMyHeart.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
What she said must’ve penetrated his thick skull because he kissed her as if they’d never get another chance.<br />
<br />
“I have to get back to the ranch before dark.” He ran his fingers through her hair and cupped the back of her head. “Miss Betsy Lynch, I... uh... want to say... been wantin’ to say it for a while now...”<br />
<br />
“Yes?”<br />
<br />
“I love you.”<br />
<br />
A kid bleated. All the goats and dogs crowded into the doorway and stared at her and Dex.<br />
<br />
“We love you, too, Dex.”<br />
<br />
“Come to the ranch with me, Betsy. Marry me. Your animals have a home there, too.”<br />
<br />
“Can’t. I’d like to—would love to—but my papa was convinced he’d find silver here. I have to stay and work the mine or I’ll lose the claim. It was his dream.”<br />
<br />
“But was it your dream? What do you dream about at night, Betsy?”<br />

<b>I Heard the Brides on Christmas Day</b> is a novella in the Hearts of Owyhee series, five books and six novellas all set in Owyhee County, Idaho. This particular novella is sweet and wholesome western historical romance.<br />

<b><span style="font-size: large;">I Heard the Brides on Christmas Day</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>by Jacquie Rogers</b></div>
<br />
The Murdock brothers have a fine ranch in Owyhee County, Idaho. The only things missing are wives and kids, so Hec orders a couple of brides for Christmas. The catch is, woman-shy Zeke doesn't know about it. Dinah and Stella have a plan— If the grooms don’t work out, they’ll start a restaurant. Farm chores are hard enough, but a peckish chicken and a raging blizzard don’t help matters. Can Hec and Zeke capture their hearts?<br />
<br />
EXCERPT:<br />
<br />
Hec had been so deep in thought, he hadn’t even noticed the wind kick up, but when the snow blew sideways into his face like sewing pins, now that got his attention. The horses shied to the side, not wanting their faces in the snow. The blinders would help keep the snow out of their eyes, but still they hopped around in the harness.<br />
<br />
Within another few minutes, the blizzard had struck with such force that he had to stop the horses. Hec wasn’t even for sure that they were on the road. White everywhere—right, left, up, or down. Nor did he know how he’d get back home. Best he stay right there and do whatever he could to keep warm. Once the storm lifted, he’d be on his way.<br />
<br />
Just as he got off the wagon, a lightning bolt flashed. The horses reared and neighed, then took off.<br />
<br />
Hec stood in the middle of what he hoped was the road. Nothing to do but start walking. Cold and lost. What a helluva fix. And he hadn’t even seen his bride yet.<br />
<br />
As Hec bent into the wind that slung stinging snow in his face as he walked. The cold and deep snow tired his legs something fierce, but he trudged on despite screaming muscles and bitter cold feet. He couldn’t be sure he was even headed the right direction, but he kept between the two lines of sagebrush poking above the white. In fact, the tips of the sagebrush were the only color at all, and as the snow deepened, even they disappeared.<br />
<br />
His face stung and his fingers and toes tingled. He’d never been so icy cold before, to the point of being beyond shivering. In fact, he felt hot and resisted the urge to take off his coat. His mind twisted in odd directions and it took all his willpower to stay focused.<br />
<br />
Whether the sun had set, he didn’t know because of the storm-darkened sky. Hec regretted a lot of things he’d done, but the worst mistake he’d ever made was ordering brides. Zeke was probably throwing a conniption fit this very moment and if Hec didn’t survive, his brother would have two wives to contend with.<br />
<br />
Hec raised his face to the blackened sky and laughed. He didn’t know why he laughed—so cold—but his brother would curse his soul to hell. He staggered to his feet, the snow clinging to his britches, but his legs wouldn’t hold and he fell to his knees. Now he knew where the end of the road was.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
There's nothing like going to Texas this time of year. It's snowing back home in Seattle but today it was 93 degrees in Flower Mound, TX. Guess which I prefer! Of course, another draw to Texas was that we have wonderful friends and family here.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The instigating factor for coming to Texas, though, was the Will Rogers Medallion Award banquet. The first two books in the Honey Beaulieu - Man Hunter series, <b><a href="http://www.jacquierogers.com/honey.html" target="_blank">Hot Work in Fry Pan Gulch</a></b> and <b><a href="http://www.jacquierogers.com/honey.html" target="_blank">Sidetracked in Silver City</a></b>, finaled in the Western Humor category. Woohoo! The committee chose four finalists and my books were two of them, so I figured I had a lock on the bronze. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
However, the probability of a bronze medal wasn't the reason I wanted to attend. I could hardly wait to meet the head honcho and the founder of the awards, Charles Williams. We did meet and I can assure you that he's just as kind and friendly as I thought, and he has a great sense of humor. </div>

Did I mention our Texas hosts? We were lucky enough to stay with one of my best friends who, unbeknownst to her, started off as one of my mentors. That would be the awesome and talented <b><a href="http://www.carolineclemmons.com/" target="_blank">Caroline Clemmons</a></b>. At this point, you might say we're a mutual admiration society. LOL </div>

So good people and good fun. What could be better? Um, well, winning. Imagine my surprise when both my books won gold medallions! And also Camp Rogers Press won two! To be honest, Mr R should've picked up the Camp Rogers Press medals, but I was all too happy to cart them back to the table myself. </div>

Caroline and Hero, Mr R and I were all flying high that night. We had a delicious steak dinner and met some really nice people. What a grand time!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
The four of us went back to Caroline's house, yammered half the night, and went to bed. The next morning, we found out that Caroline's book <b><a href="http://a.co/iy1DX2X" target="_blank">Grant Me the Moon</a></b> had won the International Digital Award (sponsored by the Oklahoma RWA) for Short Contemporary Romance! That was so wonderful--two winners in the house. Our husbands didn't quite know what to do with us. LOL. We were yipping and dancing through the living room. It must have been quite a sight.</div>

Mercy Eaton has come to Idaho to marry the man of her father’s choosing in order to help her family make ends meet back home. She just knows it’ll all work out. That's what she's told her sister and her traveling companions all the way from Massachusetts to Owyhee County, Idaho. Then she meets her groom. He's seventy years old. She nearly faints.<br />
<br />
Quill Roderick has no intention of marrying. Ever. As far as he’s seen, women leave—first his mother, then his great-aunt, then his first flame. Quill sees no reason to open his heart again, especially to some mail-order bride his crazy old uncle brought for him. But Mercy tempts him like no other with her unruly long red hair, sunshine smile, and the most alluring eyes he's ever seen. Can he keep his heart barricaded from this dangerous fireball, or are her kisses the master key needed to unlock his heart to a whole new world... Love.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I just came back from a productive and fun-filled weekend at the <a href="http://www.chantireviews.com/" target="_blank">Chanticleer Authors Conference</a> in Bellingham, Washington. You can't get any farther north without tripping over the Canadian border, so this was definitely an international event. Especially if you include margaritas and mojitos (pronounced mo-jee-tos--you can ask Sean Dwyer about that). Wendy Delaney was our pilot and Diane Garland navigated. I rode along for decoration. We met our friend Judith Laik at the Bellwether Hotel.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Anytime you're offered a free glass of champagne when you register, you know it's gonna be a good weekend.</div>

Did I mention that Honey's first book, <b><a href="http://www.jacquierogers.com/honey.html" target="_blank">Hot Work in Fry Pan Gulch</a></b>, was shortlisted for the Laramie Award? Well, it was. Of course that made me happy but considering this series is a bit hard to categorize and that humor rarely wins any major awards, I came along mostly to meet my friends that I only see once a year, and to take in a few workshops.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Of course, Honey Beaulieu came along with us--she won't let Diane out of her sight. But then Sassy whined that I never take her anywhere so I relented and said she could go with us. How was I to know that she'd end up making friends with practically everyone there? Most of the attendees knew Honey already and she made a few new friends besides, but Sassy was the belle of the ball. I didn't even know who she was with half the time. The floozy.</div>

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">About <b>Christmas Caring II</b></span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">And now about <b>Holly Jolly Courtship</b>.</span><br />
Yep, it's based on the true story of how my parents met. Only thing is, they met 70 years after this story is set, and instead of driving a new buggy, my dad was driving his first new car. Another difference is that Mom lived with another sister, but she wasn't enthused about a 15 year-old girl dating a 20 year-old man, so Mom moved to her other sister's house. The story take place over a few weeks and ends at Christmas, but the real story took a year to get to that point, and another year before they actually married.<br />
<br />
I've wanted to write this story for a long time but didn't because it seems so implausible. Yet, it really did happen, along with a few more incidents that I didn't have room in the limited word count to include that were just as implausible.<br />
<br />
I never tire of hearing family stories. They're always so fun and so special. I hope you enjoy this story and the 18 others in <b><a href="http://a.co/0xmmViX" target="_blank">Christmas Caring II: A Christmas Charity Short Story Anthology</a></b>. And thank you for supporting the Legacy Initiative of Utah.<br />

<br />
<b>About the story:</b><br />
The Murdock brothers have a fine ranch in Owyhee County, Idaho. The only things missing are wives and kids, so Hec orders a couple of brides for Christmas. The catch is, woman-shy Zeke doesn't know about it. Dinah and Stella have a plan— If the grooms don’t work out, they’ll start a restaurant. Farm chores are hard enough, but a peckish chicken and a raging blizzard don’t help matters. Can Hec and Zeke capture their hearts?<br />
<br />
<b>How it came about:</b><br />
I love Christmas stories all year around. Christmas and romance go together so well, because it's the season for giving, sharing, and loving.<br />
<br />
So what would the ultimate gift be that a man could give his brother? Lifelong happiness with the woman of his dreams. That's how I came up with the idea that Hec Murdock could order Christmas brides for himself and his brother.<br />
<br />
And what happens when two city women end up in remote Owyhee County in Idaho Territory? What if they had to do farm chores? They'd have no idea how to go about it. Well, Dinah and Stella are in that boat, but if nothing else, they're determined to make a life for themselves in the West, whether it's with the Murdock brothers or on their own.<br />
<br />
I grew up on a farm so I actually have done all these chores, but many readers have asked how to go about them, so here it is right here in this novella. I had a lot of fun thinking of things that could go wrong.<br />
<br />
<b>Hearts of Owyhee series</b><br />
All the Hearts of Owyhee novels and novellas are set in Owyhee County, Idaho Territory. "Owyhee" is the original anglicized spelling of Hawaii, and the area was named after some fur trappers from the Sandwich Islands were lost there in 1819.<br />

I was in Deadwood, SD, when <a href="http://www.carolineclemmons.com/" target="_blank">Caroline Clemmons</a> called me and told me I was going to write this book. Yes, that's what friends are for. Ha! I thought it was a crazy idea but if Caroline thought it was a good deal, I was in. The concept came from the awesome (and zany) Kirsten Osbourne, and I thought this series was wild enough that it just might work.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It has!!! So far, <a href="http://www.newwesternromance.com/" target="_blank">American Mail-Order Brides</a> has been a fabulous success and I hope <a href="http://amzn.to/1SrhLCl" target="_blank">Mercy: Bride of Idaho</a> carries banner, too. Mercy Eaton is the younger sister of Caroline's heroine in Patience: Bride of Washington (American Mail-Order Brides #42), so if you haven't read that book, you'll definitely want to get it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Mercy: Bride of Idaho </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">One woman bent on saving her family.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">One rancher determined to save his own heart.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">Is her love enough to save them all?</span></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So what was happening in 1890? I really didn't know since all my books have been earlier than that so I'd never researched that decade. Here are a few tidbits that I included in this book--some from that time and some from earlier.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Mercy is a seamstress but it seemed only likely that she'd be making her own hats. </div>

I knew that Elias Howe had invented the modern sewing machine but I didn't know that Isaac Singer had been court-ordered to pay royalties to him.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Mercy is a city girl from Lawrence, Massachusetts. Coming to Owyhee County would have been quite a culture shock, both in climate and population.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="http://amzn.to/1SrhLCl" target="_blank">Mercy: Bride of Idaho</a> is connected to the <a href="http://www.jacquierogers.com/hoo.html" target="_blank">Hearts of Owyhee</a> series even though it takes place much later, because Jake O'Keefe, the heroine in <a href="http://amzn.com/B00S05Q6ZK" target="_blank">Much Ado About Mavericks</a> (Hearts of Owyhee #4) is the mentor to the hero. And his ears are still ringing.</div>

<br />
<br />
Announcing the cover for Honey's release on March 12, 2016! This series has been percolating in my brain for a long, long time. The original idea file's date stamp is August 16, 1998. That snippet didn't even end up in this book--it'll be in the next book. Honey has undergone a name change, but her character has remained the same. Bits of her has gone into other heroines over the years, but Honey is Honey. Ain't nothin' sweeter.<br />
<br />
So why did this take so long to get written? Because it's a genre blend, and utterly unmarketable to the large publishers in 1998. So I traveled a more tried-and-true route. Now, it's time for a bit of Honey. You might say this is a mash-up of Gunsmoke, Sex in the City, and Caspar the Friendly Ghost. I hope you enjoy her.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">She's Gritty! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">She's Funny! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">She's Honey Beaulieu!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QkjYPczAZRI/VshfBJN1gEI/AAAAAAAAE4A/5JOUtDpdzqU/s1600/HB1-Snippet1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QkjYPczAZRI/VshfBJN1gEI/AAAAAAAAE4A/5JOUtDpdzqU/s400/HB1-Snippet1.jpg" width="376" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-size: large;">She's bold</span><br />
Honey Beaulieu grew up in her mama's whorehouse, the Tasty Chicken, which serves up the finest food, whiskey, and women in Wyoming Territory, but Honey takes after her crack shot Pa--and she doesn't back down from anyone or any thing.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">She's brash</span><br />
Determined not to make her living on her back, Honey does her best to keep the peace in Fry Pan Gulch, but a deputy’s salary won't buy her a home. Once she's adopted by a donkey and then a pickle-eating mule, she sets out to collect a bounty on one of the town's annoyances.<br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">She's got brass</span><br />
The owlhoot leads her on a dangerous chase. Can Honey persevere despite a wise-cracking ghost who manages to disappear when she needs him, and a handsome U.S. deputy marshal who doesn’t seem at all put off that she’s so scrawny?<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
How did folks celebrate Christmas in the Old West? How about the single gals? What did they do?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The best way to find out (and fun, too!) is to read newspapers that cover the time and place of my stories. When I was researching for my <a href="http://www.jacquierogers.com/hoo.html" target="_blank">Hearts of Owyhee</a> series, I ran across this item from the December 21, 1872 issue of <a href="http://www.theowyheeavalanche.com/" target="_blank">The Owyhee Avalanche</a> (the oldest newspaper in Idaho, still operating out of my hometown, Homedale, Idaho):</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
THE CHRISTMAS TREE. The Christmas Tree Festival will be held in Jones & Bonney’s Hall. We will stake in addition to what was said in our last issue, that the Brass Band, composed at present of Messrs. Charles Leonard, Joe Gross, Benj. Davis, Rufus King, Ferd. W. Frost and E. Douglas, will perform some of their best pieces, which will add greatly to the pleasure of the occasion.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The singing, accompanied by the organ, will be done principally by young girls who have learned all the music they know in Silver City, and who by virtue of talent, industry and a good teaching have acquired, in our judgment, wonderful proficiency in the beautiful art over which the Muses preside. They are our little folks, and not imported singers, which will make it all the more interesting; that they will do their part in first-class style for their ages, we have not the least doubt, in fact, we know they will.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The tree will be a prolific one no doubt. The Argosy of Santa Claus, St. Nicholas, & Co. arrived at the port of San Francisco four days ago, as we are informed per telegram, and a large cargo of its merchandise is on its way up here, and will not fail to arrive in time. ~~</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #38761d; font-size: large;">I could just see the hustle and bustle of Silver City.</span> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Brass bands were wildly popular all over the West then. Yes, they decorated and put up Christmas trees. They had dances and concerts. And Santa was on his way!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So why not have a Secret Christmas Angel event for all the single men and women in town? Seems like something they'd do. And that's what <a href="http://amzn.com/B017Y41F9Y" target="_blank"><b>How the Texan Stole Christmas</b></a> (a <b>Hearts of Owyhee</b> single read) is all about. Here's the blurb:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Winnifred Spangler has thrown herself into community work to ward off the pangs of her lonely heart. Fairview, Idaho Territory, is snowed in—and cabin fever has set in with a vengeance. Winnie organizes a gift exchange for the town’s single young adults. Her hope is that a few of them will find the loves of their lives.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Judd Shaw, a Texas cowhand, hates the ice and cold. As soon as the roads are passable, he’s headed back to Texas. But thanks to his childhood friend, he’s caught up in the Secret Christmas Angel game, and the name he draws is the prettiest widow in all of Idaho—Winnie.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Can Winnie’s smile melt his hardened Texas heart?</div>

<span style="font-size: large;">About </span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This book is a biography of a woman I have loved and admired for the whole of my life.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In December 1944 a German family of seven were captured and convicted of war crimes for harbouring Jews.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have known this story for most of my life. In the twilight of her years, this lady has decided that it is time for her story to be told, so it will be recorded for future generations.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The woman and her sister were interned in Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp until Liberation on 13 April 1945.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is a true account of her experience.</div>

Hanover, Lower Saxony<br />
<b>Germany</b> 1939<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The house looked the same as every other dwelling in the street. Two story, attached, weathered stone. There were three bedrooms and a bathroom with indoor plumbing upstairs. An attic, where family treasures were hidden, could only be accessed through a removable panel in the ceiling of the main bedroom closet. Downstairs was a small but adequate dine in kitchen, a sitting room and a storeroom. Inside the storeroom was a staircase which led down to a basement. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The house sat opposite the banks of the Leine River. It was home to Inga Albine and her family. She had one older sister, two older brothers and one younger brother. They loved summer when they could swim and play in the water.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Inga’s father, Adaulfo, was a well-known and successful Banker. An unusual occupation for an Aryan as most Bankers were Jewish.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Inga’s mother, Alisz, was a talented seamstress but with her husband being more than capable of providing for the family, sewing was a hobby rather than a chore. Although sewing gave her a great deal of joy, her first love was her family. She adored being with her children.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Being only children, both Alisz and Adaulfo had always dreamed of having a large family. Their dream had come true. They had five healthy children, blonde haired, blue eyed. Perfect Aryans in Adolf Hitler’s eyes. Klaus, 18, Manfred 17, Elke 15, Inga 13 and Oskar 8. The girls and Oskar attended private school while the two older boys studied Engineering. They all played the violin and with the exception of Oskar, they played very well. Neighbours often praised Adaulfo and Alisz on how polite and well-mannered all five children were. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The family were prominent in the local community. They never hesitated to help people who were less fortunate than themselves. </div>
<br />
That was to be their downfall…..<br />

"<b>Jacquie Rogers writes a trademark tale, one that we have come to identify with her. A great romp of fun and hilarity...</b>" <i>Rising Star Reviews</i></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Don't Go Snaring My Heart was originally published in <b><a href="http://amzn.com/B00KFFS2O6" target="_blank">Lassoing a Groom</a></b> (Prairie Rose Publications). Our only guidelines were wordcount and the title. This is what happens when your publisher tells you to go to it--whatever you want. Ha!</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You should know right off the bat that Dex's men love Betsy because she makes awesome cheese pie. We call it cheesecake. She used goat cheese that she made herself. I'm not quite that industrious. Or inventive. Here's a recipe from <a href="http://www.momswhothink.com/cheesecake-recipes/easy-cheesecake-recipe.html" target="_blank">Moms Who Think</a>.</div>
<br />
<b>Easy Cheesecake #1</b><br />
<br />
<b>Ingredients</b>:<br />
1 graham cracker pie crust<br />
8 ounce package soft cream cheese<br />
1/3 cup sugar<br />
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract<br />
1 cup sour cream<br />
8 ounces Cool Whip, slightly thawed<br />
<b>Directions</b>:<br />
1. Beat cream cheese until smooth, add sugar and mix well. Add sour cream and vanilla, mix well. Fold in Cool Whip.<br />
2. Spoon into pie crust and chill for 4 hours.<br />
<br />
And here's what <b><a href="http://amzn.com/B00KFFS2O6">Don't Go Snaring My Heart</a></b> is all about:<br />
<br />
<br />
Rancher Dex Madsen needs to feed his hungry crew. He tracks a herd of pronghorn and shoots one, then steps into Betsy's snare and is jerked upside down. The goats and rooster attack before Betsy cuts him down, and soon he's neck deep in her fight to protect the claim. But can he get past that killer chicken to claim her heart?<br />
<br />
Return to southwest Idaho in the 1880s in Jacquie Roger's acclaimed Hearts of Owyhee series.<br />

<span style="font-size: large;">A mail-order bride disaster!</span><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Rhoda Johnson is stranded in a lonely cabin without a groom. The townsfolk say she’s better off without him, but her drunken groom sends a message that he’ll claim her as his Christmas bride. Gunman and ex-Confederate soldier Nate Harmon comes to Idaho to make peace with his abolitionist preacher father. When half-frozen Nate reaches the cabin on a snowy Christmas Eve, instead of his parents, he’s greeted by a pretty blonde with a shotgun who keeps calling him Mr. Snyder. Will she shoot him, or melt his heart? **SWEET**</div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;">Haley Whitehall, author of the Bayou Pack series:</span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"Jacquie Rogers is known for her humor, but she shows her more serious side in this short story, and I loved it! This sweet romance is not your typical mail-order bride story. Nate travels to his parents' cabin to let them know he's changed from the wild boy who left home. His parents are not there, and he is greeted by beautiful Rhonda holding a shotgun on him, mistaking him for the no good man she agreed to marry. I thought the prodigal son returning was a nice touch to a Christmas themed story. I only wish it had been longer!"<br />

Our daughter-in-law invited us to dinner, which is always fun, but this was also my son's belated birthday dinner. She let me know the menu ahead of time because of my dietary requirements. Here's the menu: grilled chicken kabobs, cauliflower bread sticks (yum!), grilled zucchini (one of my favorites), and for the others, miso rice balls (my husband loved these, but I don't eat rice). For dessert, she planned on having fresh blueberries that she and my three-year-old granddaughter picked the day before.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><i>I loved the cauliflower breadsticks!</i></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My granddaughter ate at least as many blueberries as she put in the bucket, but her mom managed to make it home with quite a batch. Fresh, vine-ripened blueberries--who doesn't love them? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I decided to make dinner rolls because one of my son's favorites and after all, we're celebrating his birthday a month late. And he loves custard. Custard is something I can eat--except for the carbs. So I experimented, using my mom's recipe and substituting almond milk and stevia. The results were awesome, so I thought you might like to give it a try.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For those of us watching our carb intake, and also those of us who don't eat any grains at all, desserts are few and far between. But here's one that's delicious and fills both my dietary requirements: grain-free and low-carb.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Low-carb Custard</span></b></div>
<br />
2.5 cups Almond Milk (unsweetened)<br />
4 Eggs<br />
12 packets stevia<br />
1 tsp Vanilla extract<br />
1 Tbs Cinnamon (or to taste)<br />
Dash of salt<br />
Nutmeg<br />
<br />
Preheat oven to 350 degrees<br />
<br />
Spray light coating of oil into ramekins, then place ramekins into a larger pan. Have a good amount of cold water available in an easy-pouring pitcher.<br />
<br />
Heat almond milk to just below boiling (<b>do not boil</b>)<br />
<br />
In a large bowl, combine the remaining ingredients. Slowly drizzle in hot almond milk while whisking (I use the whisk on my mixer). Pour into ramekins, put pan in oven, then fill the pan with water to halfway up the ramekins. Sprinkle with nutmeg to taste.<br />
<br />
Bake for 50-55 minutes.<br />
<br />
Hint: I use a turkey baster to remove the water before taking the pan out of the oven.<br />
<br />
Serve cold or warm, just as you would any other custard. Enjoy!<br />
<br />

<span style="color: #38761d; font-size: large;">About</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Secret lives, hidden dreams, and forbidden sex in the Old West—what’s a woman of nobility to do when a handsome rancher tears through her world like an Owyhee dust devil? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Or is she? Lady Pearl Montford has performed in theatres all over the West for crowds of all sizes, but what would the world say if her secret was found out—that she's really plain old Pearl Jane Evans from Kentucky. To make matters worse, Pearl's past life as a professional trick rider is floating to the surface thanks to an unsavory suitor from her past who wants either her—or $10,000. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>A Frustrated Rancher</b> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Rugged Josh McKinnon has a ranch to build and blooded horses due in any day, but there's one problem standing between him and his dream—Lady Montford, a high-falutin' diva actress. Wrangled into playing opposite the snooty Brit in Shakespeare's ‘Much Ado about Nothing,’ Josh has to put his ranch on hold and put up with her nonsense for two weeks. Only thing is—how can he focus on his ranch when all he can think about is the way Pearl sits a horse? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>Much Ado About ... Love?</b> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With a slew of critters causing stirs left and right, meddling family members and townsfolk playing cupid, and horse rustlers causing a ruckus, Pearl and Josh have a heck of a time keeping their minds on the play and their hands off each other. When the dust settles and the curtain falls, will Pearl and Josh be able to overcome the odds working against them and find love in the wild Idaho countryside?</div>
