Looking Ahead

It's June. While the Northeast is cooking, it's cold June in the Pacific Northwest, the coldest since they started keeping records in 1894! My tomatoes haven't grown even a smidgen since I planted them a month ago. Nevertheless, summer is coming (we hope).

But I'm a writer, and everything writers do is for a project that won't come to fruition for months or sometimes years ahead. So what did I work on this week?

Down Home Ever Lovin' Mule Blues--to be released this fall from Highland Press. Not only did my editor and I work on the manuscript, but I've been working on the book video. And good news--my niece's bf, who wrote the theme song for my book video, just signed a recording contract! Check out Justin Saragueta on myspace. He's awesome. (So's my niece!)

Faery Merry Christmas--yes, a Christmas novella featuring the faery princess and matchmaker, Keely.

Looking ahead to 2009:

I'm working on a pirate novella for Love on a Dead Man's Chest with Cynthia Breeding and Deborah MacGillivray. Here's a sneak peak at the cover:

Love on a Dead Man's Chest

Next project: Romancing the Dragon. I'm so looking forward to writing the pirate and the dragon novellas. :)

And, of course, there're the ongoing projects that I'm writing on spec. I really love these stories!

Thursday Thirteen: Farm Chores before Breakfast

What Do You Do Before Breakfast?

In the Old West, farm chores lasted from dawn to dark, and even after dark, mending clothes, soaping leather, and that sort of thing still had to be done. This list is typical of what a family would expect to accomplish before breakfast. The day starts just before first light, and remember, they didn't have central heat.

1. Start the fire in the stove.
2. Pump water/heat water for washing, get dressed.
3. Feed the chickens.
4. While hens are occupied, gather eggs.
5. Pitch hay to the horses.
6. While horses are occupied, check for injuries and clean the stalls.
7. Grain the steers.
8. Grain the cows and milk them. (This counts for all 13. You wouldn't believe how tired your hands get.)
9. Separate the milk, store milk and cream in the spring house, wash the buckets.
10. Feed the pigs and nursing calves.
11. Pump water for all the animals.
12. Get the field equipment ready so you can hitch the horses as soon as breakfast is over.
13. Wash up and cook breakfast.

Even today, farmers have to do about half these chores before breakfast, but electricity has definitely made watering animals and milking cows much easier.

Farm breakfasts were no meager affair. A typical menu might be bacon, fried eggs, fried potatoes, biscuits and gravy, strawberry preserves, oatmeal and cream, and coffee. Then again, they had worked up quite an appetite. Besides, after breakfast, the hard work began.

Ah, I do love living in the 'burbs!

Faery Special Romances nominated for LASR Best Book!

Faery Special Romances has been nominated as "Best Romance of 2007" in the long print category at Long and Short Reviews. Yay! Thanks so much to the ladies at LASR, and the readers who nominated my book.

Voting begins January 1 and I think continues until January 31. I'm not quite sure how this works yet.

So congrats to Keely! But I swear, that faery is getting a swollen head over all these kudos. You'd think she wrote the book. Hrrmph.
